Dry Needling

Dry Needling vs. AcupunctureAlthough dry needling and acupuncture use similar thin needles, they are different treatments.Dry needling is based on modern anatomy and the evaluation of muscles, joints, and movement. It targets specific muscles and trigger points associated with pain, tightness, or limited mobility. Physical therapists typically use it as one part of a broader rehabilitation program that may also include exercise, stretching, manual therapy, and movement training.Acupuncture originated in traditional Chinese medicine and involves stimulating specific points on the body. It may be used to address a broader range of health concerns based on acupuncture principles. At Prime Health Physical Therapy, dry needling is used when clinically appropriate and is tailored to your individual symptoms, functional needs, and treatment goals.

Dry needling is a therapeutic technique used to help reduce muscle pain, tightness, and movement restrictions. During treatment, a trained physical therapist inserts a thin, sterile needle into specific areas of the muscle, often called trigger points. The term “dry” means that no medication or fluid is injected.

Dry needling may be incorporated into your physical therapy treatment plan to:

  • Reduce muscle tension and discomfort

  • Improve flexibility and range of motion

  • Address painful or sensitive trigger points

  • Support better muscle function

  • Help you return to exercise and everyday activities

Some patients may experience a brief muscle twitch or mild discomfort during treatment. Temporary soreness afterward is also possible. Your physical therapist will evaluate your condition and determine whether dry needling is appropriate for you.
